Emergency Medical Procedures: Medical issues at Sunflower Garden School are very rare. If a child has minor injuries, immediate first aid shall be administered and notification of the incident will be communicated to the parent who is picking up the child that day. Should there be an urgent health concern or injury, parents will be contacted immediately. If either parent cannot be reached, the parent’s authorized emergency contact will be called and, if necessary, the child’s physician. In the event that none of the above options are possible, Dr. Mastroianni in Pukalani has offered to perform medical emergency care (if child has medical insurance) or 911 will be called.
General Illness: If a child has a fever, contagious illness, excessive or projectile coughing, running of the nose, or any condition so severe or uncomfortable that it significantly interferes with the child’s ability to participate or would present a health hazard to the others at Sunflower Garden, the parents should keep the child at home. If the child is found to develop a fever while at preschool, parents will be notified to take the child home as soon as possible. We do not have the facilities to attend to illness and for the sake of others we ask that children who are not well stay at home. We all need to work together to ensure a healthy environment for all those who attend. If your child is listless or tired, it is best to keep the child resting at home. Children do not do well in a social situation if they are feeling poorly. If your child complains of not feeling well, is dizzy, has a sore throat, stomach ache, congestion, a cough, a runny nose, or has vomited in the morning, please keep him/her at home.
Children may return to preschool when their illnesses are no longer contagious, or twenty-four (24) hours after the child’s temperature has returned to normal (without the use of medication like Tylenol.)
Medication Policy: Written permission must be given on the “Permission for the Administration of Medication” form if a Parent wishes the staff to administer medication to their child during school hours—including aspirins and naturopathic remedies.
First Aid: During the course of a day, should it be helpful to your child for a staff member to administer a natural or homeopathic cream, remedy, sunscreen or insect repellant to your child, our permission form is available for you to initial and sign, should this be in keeping with your healthcare practices.
